Alternative Mediatisation of Politics: Launch of Cahier Protagoras

On 9 April 2025, we had the pleasure of supporting the launch of the 12th edition of Cahiers Protagoras—this time focused on alternative forms of mediatisation in political communication. The event, organised by Protagoras, took place at IHECS.

At the heart of Protagoras’ mission is sharing and making political and public communication research accessible.

That’s why the presentation of each new Cahier is such an important moment—a space for encounter and exchange between the researchers who contributed and the wider public.

This latest edition examines how political actors are adopting new media codes, platforms, and formats to promote their ideas. From social networks to digital influencers, these alternative approaches are reshaping the way political messages are crafted and received.

The event featured presentations from:

Nicolas Baygert (IHECS, Université libre de Bruxelles, Sciences Po), director of Protagoras, who introduced his article on “Digital communication among Alt-Right influencers: a socio-semiotic overview.”
François Debras (University of Liège, HELMo, Sorbonne Nouvelle), who presented findings from his joint research with Léa Bouazza on “Antifeminist discourse in the content of two     far-right YouTubers.” He is also the creator of the PopEx podcast.

The session was moderated by Esther Durin, member of Protagoras and Director of Research at IHECS.
